You don’t have to be good at art to try art therapy! This is a fairly common misperception.
My approach
Sometimes an image can speak a thousand words. Using metaphor or postcards, creating art, poetry, music, or working with drama, sandtray, clay, puppetry, and the body can help to express and explore feelings or thoughts. Art psychotherapy offers everything that normal talking therapy offers with the added dimension of accessing the unconscious parts of you, in a safe and contained way.
My approach to counselling is deeply person-centred, valuing each individual’s unique experience and fostering a safe, non-judgemental space for exploration and healing. I integrate psychodynamic principles to help uncover and understand unconscious patterns and unresolved trauma that influence current behaviours and emotions. By combining this with trauma-informed care, I aim to provide sensitive and compassionate support that honours your pace and capacity for change. Whether working face to face or online, my focus is on building a trusting relationship where creativity and self-expression through art can facilitate deeper insight and personal growth. We will work collaboratively to allow you to choose how you want to work, and at a pace you are comfortable with.
The modalities I have trained in include Gestalt, Transactional Analysis, Attachment Theory, Psychoanalysis and Object Relations. I am interested in learning more about Internal Family Systems, Somatic therapy, Polyvagal Theory and EMDR. Working integratively means that I can draw from a range of theories to create a bespoke therapy that works best for you.
Artistic skill is irrelevant and unimportant with art psychotherapy! The process is in the act of creating and exploring what feelings and insights emerge. Any art you might create is private and confidential, belonging to you.
